Daddy's Best Friend

Chapter 22

Chapter 22

SOPHIA’S POV

"Fuck,"

I woke up with a pounding headache, my brain feeling like it had been run through a blender.

Ugh, the unmistakable signs of a hangover. Groaning, I forced myself to sit up in bed. Memories of last night began to trickle in like a fragmented puzzle, and I winced as I recalled the ill-fated party.

Henry. I had called him, begging him to pick me up like some damsel in distress. And he had. My knight in shining armor. But after that... well, things got hazy.

"What did I do, what did I said," I tried for remember but things were hazy up there in my memory.

The worry was gnawing at me. What did I say or do last night? I had been so drunk, and drunk me was never a reliable narrator. Did I spill my guts to Henry? Confess some secret love? Make a complete fool of myself?

" I am such a fucking mess and I don't seem to know what to do about that" I groaned to myself.

Dragging myself out of bed, I attempted to piece together the fragments of last night's escapade. It was like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing.

I remembered the overpowering nightclub lights and the blaring music. Jason had dragged me onto the dance floor, his enthusiasm for the clubbing scene entirely lost on me. But I had gulped down the whiskey he'd handed me, hoping it would drown out my swirling emotions.

The conversation with Jason - it felt strangely significant. We talked about relationships, or the lack thereof in my case. I had confessed my penchant for rare connections, something he apparently struggled with too. But I also remembered mentioning Molly and her long-standing crush on him. Oh great, just what I needed - to be caught in a romantic web with my supposed friend.

"Molly, Molly," her image seem to appear in my memory, as I struggled to piece it together.

Then Molly had shown up, and our already shaky conversation had taken a nosedive into chaos. She berated me, spewing venomous words as Jason tried to mediate. But emotions had run high, and I couldn't even remember how it had ended. A phone call to Henry, that part was clear.

My thoughts circled back to that phone call. What had I told him? I pressed a hand to my throbbing temple as I mentally replayed our conversation. Had I spilled my feelings, told him something I shouldn't have?

Unable to delay it any longer, I pushed myself to get out of bed. I needed to face the aftermath of last night, no matter how painful it might be.

Walking downstairs felt like entering the lion's den. Every creaking step seemed to echo my anxiety. My heart was racing, and I was almost certain I'd find Henry sitting there, looking at me with a mix of concern and disappointment.

But as I descended the staircase, the living room was empty. Relief washed over me like a soothing balm. Maybe I hadn't said anything too incriminating. Maybe I'd managed to keep my drunken confessions to myself.

I entered the kitchen, I noticed a steaming cup of coffee waiting for me, a note beside it. My name was scrawled across the paper in Henry's neat handwriting. I picked up the note with trembling hands.

"Sophia,

You looked like you needed this. Don't worry, I didn't grill you about last night. If you ever want to talk about it, I'm here. Until then, take it easy.

-Henry"

My heart swelled with a strange mix of gratitude and apprehension. Maybe there was hope. Maybe I hadn't ruined everything with my drunken antics.

As I sipped the coffee, I decided that today was a day for reflection and recovery. Whatever happened last night, I would face it, just like I always did. And maybe, just maybe, there was a way to salvage this mess I had created.

I went back upstairs almost immediately, because I needed to compose myself. I decided to call Kylie, she would know what to do and say.

I sighed with relief when Kylie finally answered the phone, even though it sounded like I had just woken her up. She didn't sound too thrilled to be talking to me.

"Kylie, I'm sorry to disturb your beauty sleep, but this is important," I began, my voice half apologetic and half anxious.

She groaned on the other end. "Sophia, I've been up all night, and just when I decide to catch a few winks, you call. What's so urgent?"

I winced. "I promise this won't take long. Remember that club I told you about? Well, I went there with Jason yesterday. Long story short, I got seriously drunk and had to call Henry to pick me up."

There was a long pause, and then Kylie burst into laughter. It was not the reaction I had expected.

"You're laughing?" I said, both hurt and confused.

Kylie, still chuckling, replied, "Sophia, you have the most interesting life. It's like a drama series, but in real life. So, what's bothering you so much that you woke me up for it?"

I rolled my eyes, even though she couldn't see me. "I'm scared, Kylie. I can't remember much of what happened last night, but I think I might have confessed my feelings to Henry."

Kylie's laughter faded into amused giggles. "You're worried about that? Trust me, it's not the end of the world."

I groaned, feeling a mix of embarrassment and frustration. "You don't get it, Kylie. I've been playing it cool with Henry for so long, and now I might have ruined everything. Plus he has not even made any move on me yet and confessing my feelings to him is going to make things really awkward with us,"

Kylie's tone turned more serious. "Sophia, if he's really into you, a little drunken confession won't scare him away. Besides, honesty isn't always a bad thing. You don't plan to keep dressing in skimpy dresses until he finally pulls it up one day right?"

I sighed, still feeling uneasy. "I guess you have a point, but it's just... I don't know how to face him now. What if he thinks I'm some crazy, obsessive person?"

Kylie's voice softened. "Look, Sophia, just take it one step at a time. If you think you need to talk to him about what happened last night, do it. If not, just act like your usual self and see how things unfold. Henry's a smart guy; he'll figure it out."

Her words were oddly reassuring. "Thanks, Kylie. You always manage to make me feel better, even in the most embarrassing situations."

She laughed again. "That's what best friends are for, right? Now promise me you won't go on any more drunken confessional adventures."

I chuckled, feeling a bit lighter. "I promise, Kylie. I've had my fill of drama for a while."

We continued to chat, discussing everything from my college life to her own sleep-deprived adventures. It was good to have a friend who could bring a smile to my face, even when I was facing the aftermath of my own questionable decisions.

As we talked and laughed, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. Maybe Kylie was right; perhaps this wasn't the disaster I had imagined it to be. With her by my side, I knew I could navigate whatever came next, even if it meant facing Henry after my drunken confessions.

I trudged down the stairs, my head still throbbing from last night's escapade. The smell of breakfast greeted me as I entered the kitchen, and there was Henry, sitting at the table, eating in silence. I mustered up a small smile and greeted him.

"Morning, Henry."

He glanced up from his plate and replied, his tone casual, "Morning."

I fidgeted with the hem of my pajamas, a sense of unease settling in the pit of my stomach. I had to address the elephant in the room, or in this case, the hangover in the room.

"I... I wanted to say I'm sorry about last night," I began, my voice hesitant.

Henry continued eating, his expression unchanged. "Mmm-hmm."

I sighed, realizing this wasn't going to be as easy as I'd hoped. "I didn't mean to go overboard with the party and the alcohol. It was stupid of me, and I'm really sorry."

Henry finally put his fork down and fixed his gaze on me. "Sophia, I don't want to talk about it."

My heart sank. I had expected some level of annoyance, but his indifference hurt more than I cared to admit. I took a step closer, my voice almost pleading. "Please, Henry, I don't want this to cause a rift between us."

He let out a frustrated sigh and stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "You know what, Sophia? You're right. Let's talk about it."

I winced, sensing an impending storm. "I just want to apologize—"

He cut me off, his voice stern. "You went against my wishes, Sophia. I forbade you from going to that club, and yet you went. Do you even realize how dangerous that could have been? What if something had happened to you?"

I waved his concerns away dismissively, still feeling the lingering effects of my hangover. "Oh, come on, Henry. It's not like it was a big deal. I'm fine."

Henry's frustration was palpable as he countered, "That's not the point, Sophia. You disregarded my instructions and acted recklessly. You put yourself in a vulnerable situation, and it could have had serious consequences."

I frowned, a mixture of regret and defiance coursing through me. "It was just one night, Henry. I don't see why you're making such a fuss about it."

His jaw clenched, and he shook his head in exasperation. "You don't get it, do you? I'm responsible for you while you're under my roof, and I take that responsibility seriously. I worry about your safety, and you just brush it off like it's nothing."

I crossed my arms, my temper flaring. "Well, you don't have to be so controlling. I can take care of myself."

The argument escalated, voices rising in frustration as we each held our ground. Henry's concern for my safety clashed with my desire for independence, and the tension in the room grew thicker by the second. It was a battle of wills, and neither of us was willing to back down.

Eventually, Henry's patience wore thin, and he stormed out of the kitchen, leaving me standing there, seething with anger and regret. This wasn't how I had wanted our morning to start, but I couldn't deny that I had brought it upon myself. I stood there, alone in the quiet kitchen, I couldn't help but wonder how I could make things right again.

"Why can't we seem to ever get long it is always one fight or the other between me and Henry,"
