Between Four of Us

Chapter 59

Chapter 59

Camille’s heart pounded as she faced Noelle at the end of the alley, the woman’s gun leveled at her with deadly intent. The faint light of dawn cast eerie shadows across Noelle’s face, highlighting her steely gaze and unwavering determination to finish what she had started.

Behind Camille, the journalist clutched the flash drive, her face filled with a mixture of fear and resolve. She took a step back, looking to Camille and the brothers, as if silently asking if she should run and secure the files.

“Go,” Camille whispered urgently to her. “Get out of here and get that information out. It’s the only way to stop them.”

The journalist hesitated, glancing between Camille and the brothers, then gave a firm nod. She turned and slipped into the building, disappearing inside just as Noelle took a step forward, her face twisted with rage.

“You really think you can destroy us with a single flash drive?” Noelle’s voice was filled with scorn, her eyes fixed on Camille. “You’re a fool, just like your father. This doesn’t end with one article or a few secrets. We’ll always be there, always watching, ready to take down anyone who stands against us.”

Camille’s jaw clenched, and she squared her shoulders, refusing to back down. “You can try, but you won’t succeed. My father may have fallen, but he left a legacy, and it’s stronger than any of your threats. His work won’t die with him, and neither will the truth.”

Noelle’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her face. “Bold words,” she sneered. “But let’s see how brave you really are.”

With that, she raised the gun, her finger tightening on the trigger. Camille braced herself, her heart hammering as she stared down the barrel of the weapon, unwilling to give Noelle the satisfaction of seeing her fear.

But just as Noelle was about to pull the trigger, Leo lunged forward, pushing Camille out of the line of fire. The gunshot echoed through the alley, reverberating off the walls as Camille stumbled, catching herself just in time to see Leo fall to the ground, clutching his shoulder where the bullet had grazed him.

“No!” Camille cried, rushing to his side. Blood seeped through his fingers as he grimaced in pain, but he managed a reassuring smile.

“I’m fine,” he gritted out, his voice strained. “Just a scratch.”

Before she could respond, Noah and Matthew moved to shield them both, their faces set in grim determination. Noah’s eyes were filled with fury as he turned to Noelle, his voice laced with venom.

“You’ve done enough damage, Noelle. Walk away while you still can.”

Noelle laughed, the sound cold and humorless. “Walk away? You think I’d come this far just to give up? No, Noah. This is only the beginning.”

She raised her gun again, but Matthew was faster. He lunged toward her, grabbing her wrist and twisting it with a practiced precision. Noelle struggled, her face contorting with rage as she tried to break free, but Matthew held firm, his expression filled with determination.

“Enough,” he growled, his voice barely above a whisper. “This ends now.”

With a swift movement, he disarmed her, the gun clattering to the ground. Noelle staggered back, her eyes wild with fury as she realized she was outmatched. She looked from Matthew to Noah, then to Camille, her gaze filled with a cold, simmering hatred.

“You may have won this round,” she sneered, her voice dripping with malice. “But don’t think for a second that this is over. There are forces at play here that you can’t even begin to understand.”

Camille felt a chill run down her spine, but she forced herself to meet Noelle’s gaze, her own expression unyielding. “Maybe not. But I understand enough to know that you and everyone who stood by you will fall. My father’s work will see to that.”

Noelle’s lips twisted into a mocking smile, but Camille could see a flicker of doubt in her eyes. “We’ll see about that.”

With one last, defiant glare, Noelle turned and disappeared into the shadows of the alley, her footsteps fading into the distance. Camille exhaled, the tension in her body slowly releasing as she watched her disappear.

Noah turned to her, his expression softening as he reached out, his hand brushing gently against her arm. “Are you alright?”

Camille nodded, her voice barely a whisper. “I think so.” She glanced down at Leo, who was still clutching his shoulder, and her expression turned to one of worry. “Leo, you saved me… I’m so sorry you got hurt because of me.”

Leo managed a small, reassuring grin despite the pain. “It’s nothing,” he said, wincing slightly. “Just a reminder of what we’re fighting for.”

Matthew knelt beside Leo, helping him to his feet. “We need to get out of here before Noelle brings back reinforcements. There’s no telling how many allies she has waiting nearby.”

Camille nodded, glancing back at the building where the journalist had disappeared with the flash drive. A part of her wanted to stay, to make sure the information would reach the public, but she knew that her father’s work was in good hands now. She had done her part, and now she had to trust that the truth would prevail.

As they made their way out of the alley, a strange sense of calm settled over Camille. The fight with Noelle, the threats, the secrets—they had all led to this moment, a moment where she finally felt she was walking her own path. The burden of her father’s legacy, the mystery that had haunted her, felt lighter, as if she had finally found closure.

Once they were safely away, Noah slowed, his gaze meeting hers with a rare softness. “Camille… I know this has been more than you ever signed up for. You’ve shown more strength than any of us could have asked for.”

Camille felt a warmth spread through her chest, her eyes shining with gratitude. “I couldn’t have done it without all of you. My father trusted you for a reason. You’re more than just protectors to me—you’re family.”

Leo grinned, despite his injury. “Then I guess we’ve got each other’s backs for good.”

Matthew nodded, his face softening for a moment. “Whatever comes next, you won’t face it alone.”

Camille’s heart swelled as she looked at each of them, feeling a sense of belonging she hadn’t felt in so long. Her father may have left her a legacy filled with danger and secrets, but he had also given her something far more valuable: a family.

Just as the sun began to rise, casting a soft, golden light over the city, a familiar figure emerged from the shadows, a smile on her face that was both genuine and determined.

It was the journalist, holding up the flash drive triumphantly. “The files are safe,” she said, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “And the story will go live in an hour. By the time they wake up, the whole world will know the truth.”

Camille felt a rush of relief and triumph as she met the journalist’s gaze, a smile spreading across her face. Her father’s legacy would finally see the light, and the people who had taken him from her would be exposed for the world to see.

But as the sun rose higher, casting shadows on the quiet streets, Camille couldn’t shake a lingering feeling—one of both triumph and unease. She had won this battle, but she knew that the path ahead was still uncertain, filled with new challenges, new faces, and perhaps even new enemies.

And as she looked at her newfound family, she knew that whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.
