Chapter 1346: The Return Journey
Chapter 1346: The Return Journey
The arrangements for returning to the country were all handled by Jiang Jingheng. The efficiency was astounding; the group returned to Upper City that very day.Mu Chen’s body was preserved in a specially-made ice coffin to prevent decay.
Throughout the journey, Mu Yan hardly ate or drank, staying by Mu Chen’s side the entire time.
Kong Lizhen wanted to comfort her, but she was already grieving herself, let alone Mu Yan.
Although she had known the young man for less than half a month, she couldn’t forget how he smiled at her; it was like the purest water in the world, utterly clear.
She sighed lightly, preparing to approach Mu Yan to have her eat a little, when a figure suddenly passed her by.
Kong Lizhen watched Jiang Jingheng’s back, her eyes flickering. Initially, she indeed felt this man was calculating, but after observing his daily interactions with Mu Yan, she felt she might have overthought it.
A person’s mouth may lie, but their eyes cannot deceive.
His gaze was focused, gentle, even affectionate. It was not deliberate, and anyone attentive could notice it at any moment.
Jiang Jingheng walked over to Mu Yan, squatted down, and said softly, "Would you eat a little?"
"I don’t want to eat." Mu Yan’s voice was somewhat hoarse. From Mu Chen’s failed surgery until now, she had been crying intermittently, so her throat was a bit damaged.
"There will still be many things to organize once we return to Upper City. How can you do that without eating?" Jiang Jingheng said softly, "Eat a little; we should let Mu Chen rest peacefully."
Mu Yan looked at Jiang Jingheng, pressing her lips together as tears welled up again.
She still couldn’t believe Chenchen was really gone, but Chenchen’s body was right there, already devoid of warmth.
She couldn’t even deceive herself.
"I feel so uncomfortable." She sniffled and said hoarsely.
Jiang Jingheng pulled her into his embrace and said softly, "Isn’t there a saying? Some people are alive as if they are dead, and some are dead yet live forever in people’s hearts. Even though Mu Chen is gone, will he ever vanish from your heart?"
"No!" Mu Yan said firmly; she could never forget Chenchen.
Jiang Jingheng continued, "His health was never good. Even if the surgery succeeded, he would have had to take anti-rejection medications continuously, and his physical condition would never be as good as a normal person. He would have suffered; could you bear that?"
Of course, Mu Yan couldn’t bear it, but...
She didn’t want to lose Chenchen.
She understood Jiang Jingheng’s point. Her desire for Chenchen to live was merely her own wish. But perhaps Chenchen had long grown tired of this life that was not his own.
Yet his health was so poor because he had saved her back then.
"Be good, eat a little something," Jiang Jingheng said again.
Mu Yan looked at him and said, "I am not a good sister."
Jiang Jingheng spoke gently, "I don’t know if you’re a good sister, but you’re definitely a good wife. And I believe Mu Chen considered you a good sister."
Mu Yan was about to say more, but seeing his concerned expression, she asked, "Did you eat?"
"No."
Mu Yan understood then that he was waiting for her to eat.
She said, "Then let’s go eat."
"Okay." Jiang Jingheng stood up, helping her to her feet.
The two went to the dining room, where the food was laid out on the table.
Mu Yan didn’t have much appetite. She drank a glass of milk, ate half a piece of cake, and stopped.
Jiang Jingheng didn’t force her, though he didn’t eat much himself either.
Mu Yan noticed this, and placed a sandwich on his plate.
Seeing Jiang Jingheng look over, she added one to her plate too and said, "Let’s eat together."
He was right; she needed to take care of herself. Once back in Upper City, there would be lots to do.
